This is a Big. Race. Weekend. for the club with a U14 slalom on Saturday, and a U12 slalom on Sunday. The U16s are away at MSM for races both days, and the Nancy Greene contingent has a race at Edelweiss on Sunday. This means we need full volunteer support from the U10/U12/U14 groups (and as well the NG parents on Saturday). We have a particular need for gate judges on Saturday, and both gate judges and course crew on Sunday. This is the weekend to volunteer, it’s going to be sunny and not desperately cold, which is as good as it gets in February. The races are going to be fun to watch, so why not get an up close vantage point?
We are also hosting the first of two masters races next Wednesday night (Feb 13). These are fairly easy to volunteer for. We need a starter, and then some course crew to fill out the roster. These are fun nights. The masters racers know what they’re doing and call their own DSQs, so no need for gate judges. There are usually around 30 or so, and they do three runs and are done by 8:30. We will station a couple of the course crew mid-run to call out abandons (this means you get to wear and use a radio, the universal sign of importance). Sign up is here.
Huge congratulations go to our Nancy Greene group who, a couple of weeks ago, WON A NANCY GREENE RACE!!!!! This is Vorlage’s first win in 10ish years, winning athletes from the last victory are now in 3rd year university. Our Nancy Greene program has been transformed in the last 5 years with leadership from Chris Riopelle, Alistair Scott, Troy Mott, Jager Ruck and Tanya Chicoine. More importantly than any win in a race (we’re still taking it), the club has developed a structured program that is producing excellent skiers who are having fun while they learn. You can’t ask for better than that. Congratulations and good luck this weekend at Edelweiss!
Finally, more congratulations go out to Abby Thomas, alumni of Vorlage’s last winning Nancy Greene team. Abby, now a McGill University student, will be representing Canada in alpine skiing at the 29th Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk in March. While we always worry when we hear that someone is being sent to Siberia, this is something to celebrate. We send our very best wishes and the support of the entire club. Great luck, Abby!!!
