Big Race Weekend!

This is a Big. Race. Weekend. for the club with a U14 slalom on Saturday, and a U12 slalom on Sunday. The U16s are away at MSM for races both days, and the Nancy Greene contingent has a race at Edelweiss on Sunday. This means we need full volunteer support from the U10/U12/U14 groups (and as well the NG parents on Saturday). We have a particular need for gate judges on Saturday, and both gate judges and course crew on Sunday. This is the weekend to volunteer, it’s going to be sunny and not desperately cold, which is as good as it gets in February. The races are going to be fun to watch, so why not get an up close vantage point?

Please sign up to volunteer for the Saturday race here. The Sunday race sign up is here.

We are also hosting the first of two masters races next Wednesday night (Feb 13). These are fairly easy to volunteer for. We need a starter, and then some course crew to fill out the roster. These are fun nights. The masters racers know what they’re doing and call their own DSQs, so no need for gate judges. There are usually around 30 or so, and they do three runs and are done by 8:30. We will station a couple of the course crew mid-run to call out abandons (this means you get to wear and use a radio, the universal sign of importance). Sign up is here.

Huge congratulations go to our Nancy Greene group who, a couple of weeks ago, WON A NANCY GREENE RACE!!!!! This is Vorlage’s first win in 10ish years, winning athletes from the last victory are now in 3rd year university. Our Nancy Greene program has been transformed in the last 5 years with leadership from Chris Riopelle, Alistair Scott, Troy Mott, Jager Ruck and Tanya Chicoine. More importantly than any win in a race (we’re still taking it), the club has developed a structured program that is producing excellent skiers who are having fun while they learn. You can’t ask for better than that. Congratulations and good luck this weekend at Edelweiss!

***

Finally, more congratulations go out to Abby Thomas, alumni of Vorlage’s last winning Nancy Greene team. Abby, now a McGill University student, will be representing Canada in alpine skiing at the 29th Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk in March. While we always worry when we hear that someone is being sent to Siberia, this is something to celebrate. We send our very best wishes and the support of the entire club. Great luck, Abby!!!

AGM news and notes

You guys missed a real rager last week at the Britannia Yacht Club, the AGM was off the hook! No need for any FOMO though, here are some of the things you missed:

  • Don’t get used to the old school retro vibe this website is rocking. A new website is coming and it will have it’s own URL! Welcome to the 2000s VRC! The infrastructure is built, we just need to populate the site with content before it launches. Hopefully it will go live some time in July. Jud Rasmussen has led this project and he deserves our gratitude!
  • We will be overhauling our codes of conduct for next year. We want to make very clear what is and isn’t appropriate behaviour, and what the consequences will be for crossing those lines. We will also be ensuring that our coach-athlete policies align completely with those of Ski Quebec Alpin. Athlete safety will always be our first priority.
  • We have also moved to solidify the technical standing of our club. We want to ensure that we are adhering to the Aim 2 Win long term development plan. To do this, and to ensure the consistency of the message throughout the age groups, the board determined that we should hire a head coach to provide technical leadership for our club and to lead athlete development. We are extremely pleased to report that Troy Mott has accepted our offer and is the Head Coach of the Vorlage Race Club!

Finally, we elected new members to the board of directors. Please welcome Kris Bulmer and Sean Rogers as rookie overseers. The 2018-2019 VRC Board will be:

President – Dave Degroot

VP Operations – Tony Cook

VP Race Management – Shannon Rotar

Treasurer – Andrew Parolin

Secretary – Deanna Giles

U16 Coordinators – Andrew and Karen Tuck

U14 Coordinator – Sean Rogers

U12 Coordinator – Jon Bodden

U10 Coordinator – Kris Bulmer

Nancy Greene Coordinator – Jud Rassmussen

Volunteer Coordinator – Ilana Gregory

Trip Coordinator – Julie Matte

Zone Representative – Rick Vail

Past President – Christine Thomas

Vorlage season passes, Avalanche order and the AGM

Thanks to all who were able to make it out to the BBQ last weekend! It was great seeing you, and a fun celebration of a fun year. On the administrative side we remain busy, reviewing the last year and planning for the next. As part of that, please join us at our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 19, from 7-8pm at the Britannia Yacht Club. The room, and bar, will be open to us from 6:30 and as a special incentive/bribe towards your participation, we will buy you your first drink. So come, have a drink, and take part in the administration of your club!

***

There are some deadlines that are fast approaching. The first is for season passes at Vorlage. The April sale has the best deal on passes you will see all year, and you must purchase by today (April 25). You can buy them by calling Vorlage at 819-459-2301 or by purchasing directly from the website here: https://www.skivorlage.com/e/welcome_e.shtml

The second is for the Avalanche accessories that were on display at the BBQ. They have a an order deadline of May 1. The Degré ($106) and Snowfall ($75) jackets are the ones that will come with Vorlage Race Club embroidery. The Degré is the one that was at the BBQ, and the Snowfall is a similar jacket, just thinner, with less insulation. They will come in black only and they can be ordered in men’s, women’s and junior sizes.

The form must be completed and emailed to Kris Bulmer by May 1.
